| SEX GOES INTERGALACTIC
IN "WILD SPACE A GO GO" Posted by Brianne "the intern" Turner THE PORTLAND MERCURY - April 30th, 2010 ...the campy new sci-fi musical "Wild Space A Go Go" is both ridiculous and irresistible. …known for its strong drinks and convivial atmosphere, Embers' character complements the nature of the show and the actors utilize the space well. Though the entire lineup is exceptionally talented, Leah Yorkston is easily the most underutilized member of the cast, with her one solo, "Lead Us To the Pretty Land," being the most surprising and captivating of the 13 original musical numbers featured in the show. The sexual overtones are unmasked and blatant, which is what makes "Wild Space A Go Go" so unorthodox and charming. The plot is incontestably silly, but the show is fun and never takes itself too seriously. The things that make "Wild Space A Go Go" seem absurd end up being its primary selling points. |
Sassy,
sexy spoof 'Wild Space a Go Go' recalls the '60s, with panache By Holly Johnson
THE OREGONIAN April 24, 2010 "Camp and sassy, sexy and
funny,......
...combines satire and silliness with sparkling panache." Nichole Cooper is an out-of-orbit bombshell as the planet's empress. Her princess daughter, another big-haired creature (is) hilariously sketched by Rebecca Teran. "..the handsome, straight-laced Capt. Buck Braddock (the marvelous Don Colliver, who looks like a moody French movie star).." The real stand outs are the four-woman chorus, the Pretties, a group of platinum- haired go-go dancers, and then in another scene, they become the Ugl-I, a cluster of homely wannabes. Leah Yorkston, Stephanie Heuston, Ashly Will and Ashley Moore, with dark eye makeup and Sassoon haircuts, epitomize the '60s, and their vocals are great.." Choreographer Dan Murphy has kept every dance move onstage accurate to the core, and often the chorus members wear the blank stare reminiscent of Carnaby Street models from that distant decade. The live band Pars Orbitalis, conducted by Stephen Alexander, is super, and the vocal standards are high, particularly those of Cooper and Lisamarie Harrison. Costumes by Brynne Marie, from Braddock's black bondage outfit to Cooper's flouncy empress get-up, are prize-winning. |
